As the leading multidisciplinary membership-based organization in the field of aging focused on cultivating and developing professionals, the American Society on Aging is uniquely positioned to help those professionals effectively support major shifts in the aging population. Since 1954, ASA has enhanced the skills of more than 100,000 practitioners, educators, administrators, policymakers, academics, business people, and students—all working to improve the quality of life of older adults. Our members’ work is multidisciplinary and spans the specialties of physical health, technology, employment, financial and legal, housing and access, mental and emotional well-being, quality of (and access to) care, activity and social engagement.

Our Work

ASA’s role as an organization developing professionals across the field of aging has never been more important. By drawing upon its national position and expertise in the field, ASA can support both current and future generations of professionals. In so doing, ASA strengthens the field by ensuring that all professionals provide quality programs, resources and services to older adults.

The urgency is reflected in national demographics. Seventy-seven million Americans were born between 1946 and 1964. They make up 28% of the U.S. population and account for 77% of financial assets. Currently, 108 million people are over the age of 45 years. The profile of older Americans spans from the very wealthy to frail, impoverished elders without support or resources. The underpinning of ASA’s work is to understand the nature and conditions in which older American’s “live in community,” and to identify and evaluate the best resources to enhance the quality of each life touched by our members and stakeholders. This mission is accomplished through the development of outstanding programs, events and publications presented or authored by the best and brightest experts.
